Ski BanskoBansko - a ski resort with an atmosphere Bansko is located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains and right below the Pirin National Park, included in the List of World Nature Heritage. The town itself attracts visitors with its 120 cultural monuments, its museum-houses and the permanent ethnographic and Bansko School of icon painting exhibitions. A very interesting sight is the Holy Trinity Church, with its 30m high bell-tower and clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings. The region is famous for its cuisine and colourful folklore and offers various entertainment opportunities. Made of stone fortified houses appeared in Bansko during the early National Revival period. By the end of the 17th century, they had become two-storey houses, although they still adhered to mediaeval building traditions. The typical Pirin stone house has two faces - one is a stone facade facing the street, the other an open veranda leading to the three-sided inner courtyard, flanked by the building itself. Small, almost invisible doors set into the walls link the adjoining houses. In certain respects the architecture resembles monastery construction - carefully joined stone masonry, few and small gritted windows, framed with decorative bricks. The general appearance of the houses is quite stern and austere, and only the spacious verandas with their carved columns and railings provide some interplay of light and colour. Borovets Borovets is the oldest and the biggest mountain resort in Bulgaria. It is located at 1,350 above the sea level on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains among age-old pine woods, at the foot of the peak Mousala (2,925 m) the highest on the Balkan Peninsula. Borovets is easily accessible, being at a distance of 73 km from Sofia. The nearest town is Samokov, which is 10 km from the resort. Established at the end of the 19th century as a holiday residence and a hunting base of the Bulgarian Royal family, Borovets grew into an international skiing centre in the 1970s. Today the resort provides excellent conditions for a variety of winter sports: alpine skiing, cross-country, biathlon, snowboarding, ski jumping, etc. Borovets has hosted numerous winter competitions, including two editions of the Alpine Skiing World Cup Championship. The mountain slopes in Borovets have a lasting snow cover of over 1.5 m from November till May. The air is crisp and fresh, and the average temperature in the coldest month, January, is minus 4.6°C. The slopes vary in degree of difficulty and are suitable for tourists at all skill levels. All ski runs are marked according to the international standards, with signs in several languages. In the summer Borovets is just as great as it is in the winter. It offers everything a perfect vacation takes: clean and fresh air, pine forests, green meadows sprinkled with fragrant flowers and herbs, blue lakes and majestic snow-capped peaks. For nature-lovers the resort is a favourite vacation spot and a starting point of many hiking routs in the Rilla Mountains. And when the sun has gone down, the resort begins to pulse with the numerous lights of the nightlife... |
